The EU Commission has been reported today as having approved Hungary's accession to the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO). EPPO will have the right to investigate local wrongdoings related to the use of EU funds, continuously from now on and retroactively going back to June 2021, when it was set up. Even though joining the EPPO has not been set as a formal condition for Hungary to receive EU funds, the country's membership is considered as a crucially important safeguard against local corruption.In a simultaneously reported event, the European Council (Ecofin) has approved Hungary's plan to utilise the country's RRF quota, major step for the country to actually get the funds, in an amount of €10bn, later this year. As well known to the Reader, Hungary will have to meet the conditions and implement the utilisation plan by end-August, for it to get the funds, as a reimbursement, by the end of this year.Early next week, the National Assembly is going to hold another session, this time with a view to approving the constitutional amendments, which would remove President Sulyok and also the head of the Constitutional Court, and cancel the Fiscal Council's right to veto the government budget. Should the President sign the amendments, his office term would end on the day immediately following the date when those take effect. Should he refuse to sign the amendment, unsurprisingly, as that would knock him out of office, parliament would vote to initiate an impeachment procedure, for him refusing to fulfil his constitutional obligations.
