Gazprom causes massive methane leak

On June 19 Gazprom acknowledge its greatest environmental disaster in 2 years. Gazprom is the biggest gas company in Russia. The leak occurred on June 4 and Gazprom tried not to admit it. There have been several significant polluting events in Russia over the last few years. 2.7 million cubic meters of methane were emitted when emergency repair work was performed on a pipeline. The true figure might be higher than was admitted. The leak occurred in the Tatarstan Republic.Methane is a greenhouse gas which causes a major impact on the world's temperatures. Methane does up to 86 times more harm in the short term than CO2.Gazprom is probably not going to face a fine commensurate with the environmental damage. Gazprom is a semi-state company and its leadership is very close to the Kremlin. Companies in Russia as elsewhere are coming under sustained pressure to clean up their act. Investors will not like the news about Gazprom!Gazprom believes that natural gas will be a crucial transition fuel as the world moves to renewable energy.
