Germany closes RT and Russia closes German radio station

On February 2 Germany said that RT DE (Russia Today Deutschland) can no longer broadcast because its Serbian license does not authorize it to operate in Germany. RT DE was broadcast in the German language. Germany says that RT DE needs a German license. But why has Germany allowed the channel to operate for several years before realizing this?On February 3 Moscow hit back by announcing the rescission of Deutsche Welle's (DW) accreditation. DW is now no longer able to broadcast in Russia. DW vowed to continue its reportage on Russia from abroad. DW broadcasts in Russian, German and many other languages. The government has started the process to proclaim DW a foreign agent. The government intends to forbid German officials involved in blocking RT DE's operation from entering Russia. Deutsche Welle said that Russia was behaving unfairly in penalizing them for an action of the German government. Putin's spokesman denounced the ban on RT DE saying it was an attack on free expression.Latvia, Lithuania and several other countries have stopped RT broadcasting. The ban on RT in Germany seems symptomatic of worsening relations between the two countries.
