Politics: The government can’t seem to get a grip on reality

MEXICO - Report 02 Aug 2021 by Guillermo Valdes and Francisco González

The new Chamber of Deputies elected on June 6 will not convene for another month nor have most of the 15 governors-elect been sworn into office. Yet, ever since the results of that vote were announced President López Obrador has maintained a strikingly electoral focus. Although his Morena party came out on top overall during the midterms, he failed to achieve the sort of resounding victory that could help consolidate his governing project’s chances for surviving his term of office.

Convinced that, more than ever, it is up to him to create the conditions conducive to a victory in the 2024 presidential elections, all of the president’s actions in these past two months have been with that overriding objective in mind: his cabinet adjustments, his damage control efforts in relation to the Line 12 Metro tragedy, and even his decision to seemingly prematurely open the discussion about who will succeed him in office were part of those efforts. But while he is focused on getting his political house in order, evidence continued to mount of a deepening of the insecurity crisis and another round of the health crisis as the country experiences a third wave of the Covid pandemic.

These security and health issues are nothing new, nor is this the first time that government policies for dealing with such issues have been described as inadequate, to put it mildly. What has changed since the June elections is the president’s narrative.

But it would not be much of a stretch to think that half way through his term of office the continuing problems of insecurity, the pandemic, and new challenges such as rising inflation have undercut the effectiveness of his presidential discourse and that it will become increasingly difficult for him to convince the “people” that everything is going well and that a brighter future awaits. Yet the president’s inability to rectify his handling of the security and health crises may worsen even as tensions continue to mount within the 4T camp.
