GUATEMALA: Heading for a second round

Former First Lady Sandra Torres, the presidential candidate of the social democratic party National Unity of Hope (UNE), won the first round of the presidential election with more than 25% of the valid vote. She defeated 18 other candidates and obtained almost double the votes of the second place candidate, Alejandro Giammattei (13.9% of valid votes) of the rightist party Vamos (“Let´s go”). However, she did not reach the minimum vote required to be elected in the first round (50% + 1 vote) so she will have to face Giammattei in a ballot scheduled for August 11.
