ARGENTINA - In Brief 17 Aug 2019 by Esteban Fernández Medrano

After some days of rumors that former economic minister Nicolas Dujovne wanted to resign to his post, the government announced this Saturday that Hernán Lacunza, former Economic Minister of the Province of Buenos Aires, assumes the position left behind by Dujovne. Dujovne felt responsible for the current economic crisis and allegedly did not full-heartily support the latest income distribution measures, nor did he felt to be the best candidate to renegotiate the agreement with the IMF. Lacunza has a quite significant ant and well recognized track record in the public sector. He was in the past director of the International Economy Center (Centro de Economía Internacional), an institute of the Foreign Ministry dedicated to foster Argentina´s trade integration. Later he became general manager and chief economist of the Central Bank, at the time Martín Redrado was its president. In 2013, while Mauricio Macri was the head of Government of the City of Buenos Aires, he was summoned to take up the position of general manager at Banco Ciudad with Rogelio Frigerio as president of the public bank. Finally, in December 2015, Lacunza became the Minister of Economy of the province of Buenos Aires, with María Eugenia Vidal. Position which will now be take by the second in line Damian Bonari. In summary, Lacunza´s track record suggest that he is a suitable candidate for the position. What has to be seen if he will be more successful than Dujovne in running Economic Ministry at times of political uncertainty.
