Hurricane Maria unlikely to have direct impact; the country prepares

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - In Brief 20 Sep 2017 by Pavel Isa

Just day after being seriously threat by Hurricane Irma, the Dominican Republic prepares for the possible impact of Hurricane Maria. As we write, Maria is hitting Puerto Rico, as its eye is passing through the middle of the island. Reports indicate that the damage is being massive. In the DR, a direct impact is not expected since its eye is projected to pass some 50 miles North off the Northeast coast. Nonetheless, we expect hurricane speed winds and a lot of rain in the North and Northeast where soils are already saturated due to rainfall caused by Irma and storms. This could cause severe floods in that region, which is one of the most vulnerable territories in the country. Nine provinces have been already declared in red alert and evacuations from lowlands. We'll keep you updated in further notes.
