ICJ rules against Russia as war costs mount

On March 17 the International Court of Justice ruled against Russia 11-2. The ICJ ordered Russia to suspend hostilities immediately. It said Russia's claim of genocide in Ukraine is bogus. The Kremlin rejected the court's ruling and jurisdiction. Russia sent no lawyers or officials to the ICJ to contest the suit launched by Ukraine.Putin acknowledged on TV that the economic cost of sanctions is difficult. He said his government has measures in place to mitigate these. But he insisted that the special military operation was on schedule. There are reports that Central Asian migrant workers are being offered Russian citizenship if they fight for Russia in Ukraine. Some Central Asians who are naturalized Russians have been threatened that their citizenship will be stripped from them unless they volunteer for the army. None of this is through official channels. There have been attempts to recruit immigrants for the armies of the unrecognized republics of Donbas and Luhansk.Z is a symbol of Russia's fight in Ukraine. Schoolchildren have been told to pose for photos in a Z formation which are then published. An anonymous poll showed that of people aged 18-24 only 39% supported the special military operation in Ukraine.The US announced a military aid package of USD 800 million for Ukraine.
