IMF gives Belarus USD 850 million

On August 24 it was announced that the money had been granted to Belarus despite the opposition and Western governments counselling against it. The Belarusian economy has suffered significantly from sanctions for the past 12 months. Meanwhile Belarus has banned the Belarusian Journalists' Association. Anything that is remotely oppositional is outlawed as extremist. The government has suffered bad news with Belarusian athletes defecting to other countries. Russian support for Lukashenka is unstinting. Belarusian troops took part in a military display in Moscow in August 2021. Joint military exercises between the two armies are upcoming. Lukashenka seems more secure than he was in 2020. The opposition are almost all abroad or in prison. There are virtually no protests in Belarus.
