In the midst of fire

The politics author reports back to work after an unfortunate sports accident, claiming that although Turkey is in the middle of a circle of fire, not much harm will come out of it.

Yet, Turkey’s brief flirtation with the US is over as the Grand Assembly is yet to debate Swedish accession and a Turkish armed drone is downed by the US Air Force in Syria. There isn’t any progress with the EU, either. The lack of progress in establishing normal relations with “the West” looms as a major threat to Mr. Simsek’s efforts to find external financing.

At home, there is a genuine crackdown on organized crime and a diluted version of “clean hands” operation in the judiciary. At this point, the objective of these two unexpected events is unclear. The aim may simply be blackmailing MHP to cooperate with AKP in local elections, or to improve Turkey’s standing with the EU or FATF. But, the politics author will be the first to admit that President Erdogan continues to surprise him -- in a positive way.
