India withdraws participation in Russian military drills

On August 31 New Delhi announced that its troops will not take part in the KavKaz 2020 exercises in Russia. The drills are due to take place in September 2020. India says it needs its soldiers at home because of the threat from China. China has been massing troops on its frontier with India. In June clashes left 15 Indian soldiers dead. India and Russia have a warm relationship dating back to India's earliest days of independence. Russia has hastened to deliver the S-400 missile system and the MiG 29 fighter. India is one of Russia's main arms buyers.China has lobbied unsuccessfully against these arms sales to India. Russia's relationship with China is not as friendly as Putin likes to pretend.
