BRAZIL POLITICS - Report 26 May 2020 by Murillo de Aragão and Cristiano Noronha

President Jair Bolsonaro yesterday made a surprise visit to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGR) to greet Attorney Carlos Vilhena, who took office as the new head of the Attorney General’s Office. Bolsonaro also met with Prosecutor General Augusto Aras. Bolsonaro’s trip to the PGR occurred after the video of the ministerial meeting on April 22nd was released last Friday.

From now on, it will be up to Aras to decide whether or not to file a complaint with the Courts in the investigation that analyzes the accusations made by former Minister Sergio Moro about alleged interference of President Jair Bolsonaro in the Federal Police (PF). In addition, it will be up to Augusto Aras to analyze the request of the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Celso de Mello, who is responsible for the inquiry, about the request made by opposition parties for Bolsonaro’s cell phone to be seized.

Although the repercussion of last Friday´s video was favorable to President Jair Bolsonaro, as it kept the Bolsonarista militancy heated, strengthening political polarization, the gesture made by Bolsonaro increases the pressure of the Planalto Palace on Aras. Consequently, the political climate between the Executive and the Judiciary will remain tense.
