Invasion halted, economy damaged, de-occupation underway

UKRAINE - Report 07 Sep 2022 by Vladimir Dubrovskiy and Dmytro Boyarchuk

A half a year has passed since the start of the unprovoked full-fledged Russian aggression. Ukrainian armed forces, backed by Ukrainian society and extensive support from the civilized world, managed to stop the invasion across the board. By midsummer the frontline had stabilized, and the Ukrainian army had started preparing for de-occupation. Intensive hits on ammunition depots and logistics routes with long-range artillery and multiple launch rocket systems near Kherson indicated that the south of Ukraine might be the priority.

On August 29th, the Ukrainian offensive near Kherson intensified. The Russians had strengthened this direction, bringing to the area up to 20,000 of their best-equipped and trained soldiers. However, the peculiarity of this grouping is that it is located on the Western bank of Dnipro river, and it had only three bridges for supplies. As soon as Ukrainian forces disabled those bridges, leaving mainly pontoon crossings and ferries for supplying, the offensive started.

Information on how the offensive is unfolding is very scarce. But what we know from the scarce reports is that the main priority is elimination of ammunition depots, destruction of supplies, and hunting for valuable weaponry, such as air defense, artillery and tanks. Most likely the General Staff focuses on destroying heavy weaponry and ammunition faster than the Russians can replenish the grouping via pontoons and ferries. Chances for success in this direction are high, given widespread guerrilla resistance and efficient work of long-range artillery.
