The latest nationwide survey from Pulse Asia, one of the two reputable pollsters in the country, continues to show that if elections were held today, Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. would win hands down.Conducted from January 19-24, the results show Mr. Marcos enjoying a 60% voter share, up from 53% in December.Second placer Leni Robredo, the Vice President, garnered only a 16% share, down from 20% previously.Voter supports for the other candidates were mostly unchanged. Chart 1: First Choice Preference for President in the 2022 Elections Political analysts agree that Mr. Marcos’s majority lead in the presidential race is unprecedented since the return of democracy to the Philippines in 1986, the year his father was ousted from power and the whole family went into exile.He enjoys broad-based support across regions and income classes with a message of unity and a promise of returning to the golden years of his father’s rule.He is also backed by a well-funded campaign organization and high-calibre election lawyers who are clearing away one by one the disqualification suits against him. With less than three months to go, the opposition is adamant that voter preferences could still change.After all, they say that this time in 2016, surveys showed President Duterte ranking third with a similar voter share as VP Robredo now and yet he ended up winning close to 40% of the votes.
