It’s not getting any better here

TURKEY - Report 28 May 2021 by Murat Ucer and Atilla Yesilada

As we’ll be extremely tied up over the weekend with one of us traveling, we’ve decided to issue our Weekly today.

The ongoing revelations by Mafia boss Sedat Peker marks the Final Act in Erdogan’s reign, according to our political analyst, because he missed the chance to quash them by sacking Interior Minister Soylu. His loss of support in polls will likely accelerate unless he manages the Covid-19 crisis and the economic turnaround adroitly. Can he?

The Final Act has begun in a different sense, too. Erdogan threatened IYIP chairwoman Mrs. Meral Aksener with violence, hinting that he may try to sustain his waning fortunes through coercion. The politics author doubts he has the wherewithal, while the opposition collectively shrugged the threat off. Yet, the coming days are certain to witness high-wire political acts and even poorer economic sentiment.

Turkey needs Russian jabs and tourists to facilitate faster recovery, but these are not forthcoming. We inquire why, detecting three potential causes, but none are easy to remedy from Turkey’s viewpoint.

After savagely ripping into Biden during the Palestine-Israeli clashes, Erdogan now says he wants a deal. But does Biden want one, too? We start unveiling our scenarios for the Erdogan-Biden meeting at the sidelines of NATO Summit.

On the economy front, we will see several important data releases this week, including Q1 growth data on Monday, May PMI print on Tuesday, May inflation data on Thursday and May (preliminary) trade data some time mid-week. We share our forecasts on growth and inflation, and take a quick look at where we are in terms of growth, inflation and the current account dynamics.

We also talk a bit about why the TL has been relatively stable – well, until the last day or two.

Cosmo is on steroids again, because He argues it might be high time to take a careful look into the rewards of Turkish assets.
