Izyum cauldron: Russian frontline broken near Kharkiv

UKRAINE - In Brief 09 Sep 2022 by Dmytro Boyarchuk

Over the last three days we have observed a breathtaking development at the front. While all eyes were on the South, the Ukrainian army unleashed a swift offensive near Izyum (close to Kharkiv). Recall, back in May, the Izyum direction was one of the key priorities for Kremlin to capture Luhansk and Donbas oblasts. In this area Russian forces took positions on the western bank of Oskil river trying to encircle Ukrainian forces in Donbas. The grouping was one of the most capable, with up to 25,000 soldiers mainly located in Izyum (currently it was reduced to 10,000 soldiers). The peculiarity of the grouping was that the main supplies passed via Kupiyansk located on the North from Izyum. Back in May Ukrainian forces tried to reach Kupiyansk with artillery but we know little about whether those attempts were successful or not. On September 7th the Ukrainian army started an offensive that appeared to be a big surprise for Russians. Probably, the Kremlin did not believe the Ukrainian army would dare to start a counter-offensive in any other direction except near Kherson. Just for three days Ukrainian forces penetrated deeply into the occupied territories, approached Kupiyansk and took Izyum into operational encirclement with fire control over remaining routes. A video how the offensive unfolded is here https://cutt.ly/8CIRGfc The Russians are trying to bring reinforcements into the area to save the grouping from the Izyum cauldron. Heavy fighting is underway. The next several days will be decisive in this battle.
