Japan giving air defense to Ukraine

On December 28 a Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman fulminated against the decision, saying there will be repercussions. On December 22 Japan made the announcement to donate Patriot missiles to the US, which in turn allows the US to donate other Patriot missiles to Ukraine. Japanese law prohibits donating arms to warring countries. Russia said it considers this move to be a hostile act. Japan and Russia dispute the Kuril Islands, which Japan controlled until 1945. The two nations have never settled this. Nevertheless, Japan and Russia had fairly warm relations until the Ukraine War. South Korea and Japan are worried about Russian and Chinese fighter jets that have been conducting joint exercises over the East China Sea.
