After the August 2016 municipal elections, Mr. Herman Mashaba assumed office as the Mayor of Johannesburg . He was a member of the Democratic Alliance (DA), the main opposition party to the ruling African National Congress (ANC). Mr. Mashaba’s taking office as the Mayor of Johannesburg meant that the ANC lost to the DA during the 2016 local elections, making that the first time since 1994 that Johannesburg had a non-ANC mayor. In fact, the DA had formed a coalition with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to remove the ANC from power in the city.
