Justice Gilmar’s decision has raised tensions between the branches of government, the STF reviews the Eletrobras case, and the truckers’ strike should be timid
A new clash between the Supreme Federal Court (STF) and Congress has heightened institutional tensions. Justice Gilmar Mendes, in a single-justice decision, ruled that only the Prosecutor General may file criminal charges against an STF justice. He also determined that the impeachment of a justice must be approved by two-thirds of the Senate, rather than by a simple majority. Today, the Supreme Federal Court is reviewing a case involving the agreement between the federal government and Axia (formerly Eletrobras) related to a lawsuit challenging the limitation of the government’s voting power in the company. Also today, there is significant attention on the threatened strike by a group of independent truck drivers. However, according to information gathered across several sectors, the expectation is that the movement will not gain broad support.
