Kazakhstan macro: a new economic agenda for a new government

In early February, Kazakhstan’s President Tokayev accepted the resignation of the government headed by Mr. Smailov, who had been in charge of the cabinet of ministers since January 2022. The position was handed over to Mr. Bektenov, who had served as the head of the presidential administration since April 2023. The president of the country has set very ambitious economic goals for the new cabinet. These goals aim to stimulate economic growth while ensuring the expansion of the revenue side of the budget. It will be interesting to see to what extent the new government can achieve these goals, which will become clearer towards the end of 2024. With the new prime minister in charge, the new government has a fresh perspective on how to tackle economic challenges.
