Kazakhstan returns to normal

On January 10 shops were open and people were on the streets of Almaty. It was a day of mourning for the dead. Public transport was functioning.The government blamed terrorists and said many were foreign. 6,000 people have been arrested. Many are guestworkers from Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. The cause of the insurrection seems to have been unemployment and inflation, as well as the fuel price hike. The KZT fell dramatically due to the wild disorder of last week. Kazakh stocks also suffered severely. Some of this has been made up since order was restored.Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) troops are in Kazakhstan. They are due to be withdrawn within days if all is well.Tokayev appears to have tightened his grip. The question is whether Nazarbayev's removal as Chairman of the Security Council means he has lost his power. or if it is simply a PR exercise to mollify public opinion.
