Kazakhstan stripping Nazarbayev of his title

The Kazakh Parliament is debating stripping the former president of his title ''Leader of the Nation'', which he was supposed to hold for life. Nazarbayev has been effectively sidelined since the deadly riots in January 2022. As Leader of the Nation he and his family could not be prosecuted. Any criticism of him is criminalized. Nazarbayev's family have lost immunity from prosecution but he has not. As President Tokayev has backed legislation to remove this immunity the bill is almost certain to pass. Nazarbayev retired as president in 2019. He was thought to be the power behind the throne despite Tokayev's being president since 2019. Since January 2022 Nazarbayev has been progressively deprived of various offices. His relatives have been obliged from heading various state companies. Tokayev has publicly stated that he wants Nazarbayev's relatives to donate their unexplained wealth to charity.Nazarbayev is 81 and reportedly in very poor health. It is hard to see him being charged with a crime. More likely he will be forced to disgorge ill-gotten gains.
