Kazkhstan banning foreigners from owning farm land

On April 7 the Kazakh Parliament's lower chamber voted to forbid foreigners from buying or even renting agricultural land. The bill has to go to the upper chamber but it is almost certain to be approved. A 5 year ban was imposed in 2016 but that is due to expire. Some companies rented land before that law was implemented and some leases are ongoing until 2025.The idea of selling land to foreigners was very unpopular. The law against it is perhaps foolish since the agricultural sector badly needs investment and foreign companies are much more willing to do so if they own farms or at least have a long term lease on them.
