Kolomoyskiy lawyer appointed head of president office

UKRAINE - In Brief 21 May 2019 by Dmytro Boyarchuk

Andrey Bohdan, lawyer of Ihor Kolomoyskiy was appointed head of the president office. Mixed feelings about this decision. Definitely a bad signal for the IMF in the context of Privatbank issues. However, personally, I had a positive impression from his interview he gave to journalists after first round of the elections. The words and thoughts he shared were right and encouraging. After this appointment Zelenskiy will be unable to get rid of being named 'Kolomoyskiy's puppet'. The presence of Bohdan will serve as an evidence of Kolomoyskiy's influence. There are rumors that the Trump administration made it clear that appointment of Bohadn is not welcome. If so, this move of Zelenskiy is really a risky one. In such a layout I'm bearish on the IMF prospects. The Fund will require guarantees of the NBU independence and will be closely watching what is happening around Privatbank. It might take pretty much time before we see the next wire. However, things are developing extremely fast, and we cannot rule out the next day more critical news arriving to change the layout dramatically.
