Kyrgyz Government parties win election and the opposition cries foul

On November 28 the results were announced showing that pro-government parties have secured 36 of the 54 party list seats. The Fatherland Party, the Trust Party and the Harmony Party all performed strongly. Together they took over 40% of the vote. Ray of Faith (a moderate Islamic party) also won some seats and is broadly pro-government. The United Kyrgyzstan Party is the main opposition group and it also won some seats, as did the Alliance Party.The Ata Meken Party was initially recorded to have 71,000 votes. The screen tabulating votes was turned off for 40 minutes. When it was turned on again it showed 44,000 votes for the party. The opposition has said that the election was rigged. 10% of ballot papers were declared invalid. It is alleged that many voters were bribed. Only 31% of people voted. The President has sweeping powers under the constitution adopted this year.
