Kyrgyz Parliament confirms Japarov as president and prime minister
On October 16 Prime Minister Japarov was confirmed by Parliament as president as well as PM. President Jeenbekov resigned. He said it was to prevent bloodshed. The Speaker of Parliament was supposed to take over as president but said no. The presidency seems a poisoned chalice because the country is in turmoil. The offices of president and prime minister are supposed to be held by two different people. Combining them in the same person is unprecedented in Kyrgyzstan. Some people say that this move is unconstitutional. Japarov, 51, was suspected of kidnapping in 2013. He fled to Kazakhstan. He was extradited back to Kyrgyzstan in 2017. Japarov was given an 11 year jail sentence. He was freed by a crowd on October 6. Japarov is a lawyer who has been in politics for decades.
