Kyrgyzstan files lawsuit against Canadian gold company

On December 16 the suit was filed against Centerra Gold for violating the rights of its workers at Kumtor Mine. The company ran the mine for over 20 years. The company was said to have stopped the administrator from having access to the mine's computers when the government assumed temporary control of the mine. The government said it was compelled to do so because of persistent lawbreaking by Centerra.Centerra Gold has not released a statement about the suit. It has a concession to run the mine.The mine has been the focus of disputes about finances and ecological concerns. The current Kyrgyz President rose to prominence for protesting against Centerra. The mine has been in government control since May 2021. Since July 2021 Centerra has had an arbitration claim against Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyz oppositionists are worried that the government is not being entirely open about what it is doing with the mine. Some fear defalcation of the profits. The Prime Minister said that since May 2021 the mine has produced 4.1 million tons of gold and this has earned USD 62 million for the public purse.
