Leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia to talk in Brussels

On December 15 President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan met with the President of the European Council. Four hours of talks took place. This is the 5th time that the two leaders have met in the past 12 months. The two countries are discussing re-establishing transport and communication links.The European Union would like to assist the two countries in establishing a lasting peace. There has been a dispute over the ceasefire line between Azerbaijan and Armenia since the 2020 war. There is regular sniping across the line. There is a hotline between the two ministries of defense so they can de-escalate any firing that breaks out. On December 14 Turkey and Armenia agreed to exchange envoys. This will not yet mean full diplomatic relations. Turkey and Azerbaijan are closely ethnically and linguistically related. Turkey is the military backer of Azerbaijan. There is bad blood between Armenia and Turkey because of the Armenian Genocide which is still denied in Turkey. Ankara and Yerevan are working towards normalizing relations.
