The United Russia party won Moscow’s municipal elections with 67% of the seats in all the assemblies. However, in several small assemblies, opposition candidates also won some seats and even won majorities.

All interim governors appointed by the Kremlin throughout 2016-2017 won their regional elections in September with at least 60% of the vote. That proves the sustainability of First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Sergei Kirienko’s approach towards regional governance and confirms his ability to ensure a desirable outcome in the 2018 presidential election.

Russia moved one step ahead of Ukraine in discussing the conflict in the United Nations. Russia unexpectedly changed its position regarding international peacekeepers and even drafted a UN Security Council resolution that would put international troops between Ukraine’s government forces and the breakaway regions.

Amateur angling has never been properly regulated in Russia but there is now a discussion about licensing it and introducing special IDs for nonprofessional fishing. Over one quarter of Russians either fish themselves or have household members who do, and almost half of them do not approve of any possible regulation.
