Macroeconomic conditions and outlook in the second wave

In April, there was a dramatic “second wave” of the pandemic in India. This has been a health catastrophe, particularly for the urban rich and for rural populations. In this report, we review conditions in early 2021 and summarize present health knowledge about the second wave.

We look ahead into the health scenario, show a cautiously optimistic picture, and identify the questions that require focus.

We examine high frequency data and argue that the latest data shows less damage when compared with the April/May 2020 period immediately after the nationwide lockdown. Export demand seems to be faring well.
