Major protests in Armenia against peace deal with Turkey

In Yerevan 200 demonstrators were arrested in May 2. They were irate that the government is considering recognizing Nagorno Karabakh as Azerbaijani territory. At the moment Armenia recognizes Nagorno Karabakh as an independent country called 'Artsakh'. Armenia is the only country in the world to recognize Artsakh. But in 2020 Armenia lost control of Nagorno Karabakh.Azerbaijan and Armenia seem to be on the cusp of permanent peace. That would also normalize relations with Turkey. Russia does not seem to be in a position to help Armenia in the case of renewed conflict. That is another incentive for Armenia to mollify her neighbors.Opposition to a peace treaty with Azerbaijan means that it might not happen. Hardline Armenians consider it treason.
