Politics: Marcelo Ebrard and the MC party are left charting out increasingly complicated decision trees

After he lost the final opinion polls that formed the basis of the Morena presidential nomination process, Marcelo Ebrard stated there was no longer any place for him in the governing party and that he, nevertheless, would be on the ballot in 2024. But within a matter of days, it became clear that he had never considered, much less explored the viability of a backup plan in case he lost that contest. With all of his competitors for the Morena nomination validating the outcome, and the opposition coalition already committed to a nominee of its own, his only serious chance to appear on the presidential ballot next year would be if Morena were to re-stage the nomination process (which Ebrard would probably have even less of a chance of winning) or the MC party were to choose him.

But while the MC had long been deeply divided over whether to run on its own next year or join the PAN-PRI-PRD Broad Front for Mexico (FAM), in recent days the party suddenly appeared united around the idea of nominating one of its members, Nuevo León Governor Samuel Garcia, with some MC politicians openly rejecting the idea of considering Ebrard. Further complicating matters, García’s only path may involve resigning from office and handing one of the MC’s only two governorships to the PRI.
