This politics-only Weekly is dedicated to understanding President Erdogan’s motives. By sending the legislation on the ratification of Swedish membership in NATO, he looked like a good team player. He also remained comparatively composed in the early days of the Israel-HAMAS war, only to blow off his top in the last few days. While his outbursts ended the thaw with Israel, it is not certain that currently the damage goes beyond that. Just how much damage Erdogan’s advocacy of HAMAS will cause the economy and politics, will largely depend on how long the war lasts.

Yet, Erdogan is not “just being Erdogan”, when he Israel-bashes; it is more likely that he is rationally responding to competition among nationalist and Islamist parties to insult Israel not to lose market share in a crowded market.
