Mono-party ruling: Servant of the People takes an absolute majority in the parliament

UKRAINE - In Brief 22 Jul 2019 by Dmytro Boyarchuk

Election committee has processed 2/3 of votes and we already can see that presidential party Servant of the People has won an absolute majority at the parliament. They have at least 249 seats while only 226 needed to appoint the Cabinet. Attracting independent MPs gives Zelenskiy constitutional majority. For the first time in our modern history we will have mono-party ruling. This news is both good and bad. It’s good because Zelenskiy will be able to appoint Chief Prosecutor and Head of Secret Burau of Ukraine without any concessions with political players. If his intentions are really good – it’s a great breakthrough for the country. Ruslan Ryaboshapka, Deputy Head of President Office, was named as the main candidate for the Chief Prosecutor’s chair. Ruslan deserved many compliments from civil society leaders and his appointment will be a great reform by itself. The same story with Prime-Minister. No political bargaining. The leaders of presidential party decide unilaterally who will lead the Cabinet. And Zelenskiy made it clear that premier should be a professional economist. Several names are circulating around and all of them are good whoever is selected. Bad news – a huge number of freshmen enters the power. They have neither experience nor knowledge needed for efficient governance. Incompetence might the stumble block for Servant of the People on its way to successful reforms. Anyway, we recognize an unprecedented change of elites on all levels of power. Change of local elites is looming. Local elections are very likely to come already this fall.
