Moscow hosts summit of its allies

On May 16 Putin hosted the president of five member states of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO). CSTO members are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. It marked the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the CSTO. The meeting was scheduled months ago.Putin is keen to demonstrate that Russia is not isolated. The CSTO agreed to host joint military exercises in October 2022. On May 15 Belarus moved thousands of troops to the Ukrainian border. It is suspected that the aim is to force the Ukrainians to station troops along their northern frontier in case Belarus attacks. Belarus says it has not been involved in the war. However, Russian troops based in Belarus attacked into Ukraine with at least the tacit approval of Minsk. Belarus is totally economically dependent on Russia.
