New conflicts between Bolsonaro and the economic team do not threaten Guedes’s position

President Jair Bolsonaro reacted strongly after the Special Finance Secretary of the Ministry of the Economy, Waldery Rodrigues stated in an interview that pensions could be frozen to finance the Renda Brasil program. Through a video posted on Twitter, Bolsonaro said that his government “is forbidden” from speaking of Renda Brasil, and that the Bolsa Família program will remain active.

Amid the negative repercussions of the President’s speech, the Minister of the Economy, Paulo Guedes, called the disagreements between Jair Bolsonaro and members of the economic team disruptions in finding a way to finance Renda Brasil. During a live stream held by SinditeleBrasil, Guedes recommended that one should not pay attention to the noise, but rather look for the signals. And, according to the minister, the signal “...is that reforms are progressing. The economy is coming back. The president trusts his Minister of the Economy." Guedes reiterated that Renda Brasil would take advantage of the experience gained from the emergency aid program and continue to make payments to socially vulnerable people at a higher rate than provided by Bolsa Família.
