Head of the Presidential Administration and long-term Putin’s trusted friend Sergei Ivanov stepped down to be replaced by his former deputy Anton Vaino, who is younger and is not a Putin’s friend. That continues the overall trend of Putin gradually replacing his old trusted friends in key government positions with younger politicians that owe Putin their career.

Russia’s Minister of Education and Science Dmitry Livanov resigned as the Kremlin tries to improve the public support for the government ahead of the September 2016 parliamentary election and switches policy priorities from science and innovation to promoting patriotism in high schools. The new Minister Olga Vasilyeva comes from the Presidential Administration where she worked with pro-Kremlin nonprofits and the Russian Orthodox Church.

Russia continues to use its involvement in the Syrian crisis as a bargaining chip in its relations with the West and for that reason it spares no effort to demonstrate its ability to influence the situation in the region. That was the main reason for Russia to use an Iranian airbase for a strike against ISIS using its long-range bombers. This way Russia demonstrated its ability to reach deals with major regional players although too much international boasting caused Tehran’s irritation.

After a brief spike of prestige the job of school teachers rolled back to a rather unpopular position as the public once again (after a brief change) started believing that this occupation creates very limited opportunities for securing comfortable well-being financially.
