New Governor of St Petersburg promises renovation

On September 18 Alexander Beglov was sworn in as the Governor of St Petersburg. St Petersburg is Russia's second biggest city and its former capital. The new governor pledged to upgrade the city's infrastructure. He has had himself filmed handing out snow shovels in readiness for winter. A large new park is planned for the banks of the River Neva. The city will also get a new fleet of buses. He has secured a pledge of billions of RUR from the Federal Government. Beglov was previously an aide to President Putin. Beglov never sought public office until now. He is not confident in handling the media and tries to avoid them. To his foes he is an incompetent puppet of the president. The governor is conspicuously religious but that is not much of an advantage in St Petersburg. Beglov is given to wild conspiracy theories. Beglov's election on September 8 was marred by allegations of large scale irregularities. Turnout was a measly 30%.
