New top general appointed in Ukrainian Army

On February 8 President Zelensky promoted Oleksandr Syrsky to be the armed forces chief. Zelensky expressed gratitude to the previous armed forces chief, Valerii Zaluzhnyi. Zelensky acknowledged in November 2023 rumors of tension between himself and Zaluzhnyi but said the rumors were false. Zelensky said the military needs renewal. The Ukrainian military has not had any significant victories for over 12 months. Ukrainian forces in Avdiivka are coming under increasing pressure. Russia has tunneled behind Ukrainian positions. Ukraine has beaten them back for the moment. It is unlikely that Ukraine will hold the city beyond March 2024. It is almost surrounded and has been under assault since November 2023. A shortage of shells means that Ukraine is struggling to answer Russian bombardments. Avdiivka is now the pivot of the war. Ukrainian supply routes to the city are close to untenable, and the city is almost surrounded. Ukraine has many defenses and tunnels there. The battle resembles Bakhmut in 2023 but this time Ukraine is not boasting about inflicting heavy losses.
