On March 18 the Ukrainian Parliament confirmed Ihor Petrashko as Minister for the Economy. Petrashko studied at Vanderbilt University and speaks fluent English. PM Shymhal appointed Petrashko on March 17. Parliament has now gone into recess due to coronavirus. Petrashko, 44, has been an executive of Sberbank, a management consultant, an energy company manager and agricultural manager for UkrLandFarming. In that last job Petrashko worked for Bakhmatyuk who is an oligarch in exile due to charges of embezzlement in Ukraine. Petrashko is a political ingenue. He faces a very challenging situation. The UAH lost 5% of its value since March 5. The Central Bank spent USD 1 billion trying to support the UAH. The new prosecutor-general is Iryna Venedytkova.
