The head of Nord Stream 2 AG which is building the gas pipeline said that the project will finish in August 2021. The pipeline meets the licensing requirement. It should be functioning by the end of 2021.The pipeline is due to increase Russian gas supplies to Germany by 100%. Other Western European countries will also buy the gas. Poland and the Baltics were against the pipeline. They fear it will give Moscow a stranglehold on EU policy.Ukraine is worried since the pipeline will obviate the need for Russia to send gas across Ukraine. Ukraine will therefore lose billions of USD per annum in transit fees.Biden waived sanctions on Nord Stream 2 saying it was too late to prevent the pipeline. He also wished to avoid upsetting Germany. The US is trying to get Germany to agree to a stronger pushback against Russia if Russia's actions towards Ukraine are seen as escalating the conflict. Angela Merkel assured Ukraine that Germany still supports her.The US Congress will probably continue with sanctions on Nord Stream 2. Buyers of the gas will probably be sanctioned.
