Officials of the Administration of former President Danilo Medina Sanchez are arrested

During the night of Saturday and early Sunday morning, ten former officials and close associates of the Administration of former President Danilo Medina Sanchez were arrested, as a result of the Anti Octopus Operation carried out by the Attorney General of the Republic. Among those arrested are Carmen Magalys Medina Sánchez and Juan Alexis Medina Sánchez, both brothers of the former president. The former Minister of Public Health, Mr. Lorenzo Hidalgo, the former president of the Patrimonial Fund of Public Reformed Companies (FONPER), Mr. Fernando Rosa Rosa, and the former general director of the Office of Supervision of Public Works (OISOE), Mr. Francisco Pagan, were also arrested. The detainees are accused by the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic of being "privileged providers and front men who took advantage of family ties with political power to accumulate fortunes during the past administration" During Sunday afternoon, Mr. Danilo Medina Sánchez defended the honesty of his government officials, although he acknowledged that there may be exceptions. He also stated that he is not opposed to the investigation of any act that might be considered illegal and publicly stated that if someone is responsible of an illegal act “… [it must] receive the full weight of the law”. Medina Sanchez pointed out that he believes it is the "first time that we are facing the use of the State power in an inconsiderate, outrageous and abusive way typical of cowards."
