Oil spill in north Russia

On May 13 an oil spill in the Komi Republic led to a state of emergency being declared in the area. 7 tons of crude spilled into rivers and onto the land. A pipeline accident at a facility run by Lukoil was probably the cause of this.The pipeline connected the Oshkoye oil field to a storage facility. The Kolva River is now polluted with oil. Lukoil has sent 150 people to contain the leakage. Ice on the river makes it impossible to use a boom.Environmentalists said that the leak is larger than Lukoil admits and occurred earlier than May 13. The metal in pipelines is corroding and this was the probable cause of the leak.
