Data tracking the latest Covid-19 wave in the country show that new infections have started to drop, particularly in Metro Manila. Samples sequenced by the Philippine Genome Center in January traced almost all the cases to the Omicron variant. Although infections may have peaked in the nation’s capital, daily cases are still much higher than the peak of the last wave, not counting the suspected larger number of unreported cases. Infections have also started to spread to other regions and experts project that it will take a couple of months more for daily cases at the national level to drop back below 1,000. However, there is talk now of lowering Metro Manila’s alert level a notch in February, which the Covid19 task force will reportedly take up over the weekend.
