President Putin put an end to a long-lasting rivalry between law enforcement agencies by dissolving some and creating a new federal service, the National Guard, which will be in charge of all internal troops. The new agency that will have control over almost all armed units inside the country is headed by Putin’s former head of security and close friend.
The Panama Papers did not influence Russia’s political elite because the general public remained largely unaware of the revelations, and the nation’s top leaders easily denied all the allegations. However, it may still impact medium-level government officials who would face scrutiny from the Presidential Administration.
Russia’s liberal opposition once again failed to reach an agreement on coalition cooperation ahead of the September 2016 parliamentary elections, thereby severely undermining their chances to secure any seats at all.
A successful space rocket launch from Russia’s brand new Far Eastern spaceport proved that the port is fully operational, and Russia’s space ambitions are supported by new infrastructure.
A large majority of Russians are active internet users but the share is no longer growing. At least thirty percent of Russians still do not use the internet, meaning that they operate in a different information space.
