Peru: New political crisis looms

A few minutes ago, Ms. Mirtha Vasquez, the Prime Minister, resigned. This follows last week resignation of interior Minister, Mr. Avelino Guillen on the back of President Castillo decision to support General Gallardo in the police and failing to back his plan to clean up the police. Although the situation is fluid, this confirms President Castillo decision to support individuals that lack transparency and some that have close ties with corruption. We have describe at length in our monthly essays that President Castillo has brought to the Civil Service individuals that either try to benefit themselves in government; or are part of larger corruption scam. Last week President Castillo granted a lengthy interview to CNN and he couldn't answer all these accusation. At the time we wrote this note he was looking for a new Prime Minister. But this time he has been under fire from Nuevo Peru, the political party led by Ms. Veronica Mendoza and his strong ally in Congress. Had he lose this support, the opposition in Congress may have enough votes to impeach him. We will keep you posted of any additional developments.
