Peru: Peaceful protests

Last night the announced protests by the leftists groups and unions took place. They were more peaceful than anticipated and according to Interior Minister, Vicente Romero, gathered in total 21,000 protesters, of whom 8 were injured (4 civilians and 4 policemen) and 6 detained. Although the protest had less impact than their organizers anticipated, they should not be minimized. Protesters demanded President Boluarte's resignation, justice for the 49 protesters who died in previous marches, and a referendum calling for a Constitutional Assembly to write a new Constitution. With Ms. Boluarte and Congress's deep unpopularity and the economy in recession, the likelihood of more protests cannot be dismissed. But unlike previous protests, supporters are less radical than previously. We maintain our view that Ms. Boluarte will stay in office until July 2026. On the back of these protests we cannot dismiss the possibility of populist concessions from Ms. Boluarte and from Congress. Alfredo
