Philippines: Jobs trend slightly reverses course

The Philippines’ employment rate increased slightly, to 95.5 percent in January 2024 from the 95.2 percent posted in January of the previous year. The rate was, however, lower than the 96.9 percent employment rate recorded in December 2023. Some seasonality is definitely involved here. Considering the huge economic scarring during the pandemic on the Philippines' education, training and the labor market, the government's recently announced "Trabaho Para sa Bayan" Act for more productive and transformative employment program is absolutely necessary to achieve higher levels of productivity and economic growth.
