Trump met President Putin in Helsinki on 16 July. The meeting was notable for the good chemistry between the two and there appeared to be no disagreements. At the press conference they referred elliptically to a behind-closed-doors agreement on Syria. This could guarantee security for Israel as Trump is loyal to Israel as to no other ally. He moved the US Embassy to Jerusalem which other presidents promised to do but did not. As part of the deal, it is speculated that the US will withdraw from Syria so long as Iran does. The US will not intervene even if there are allegations of gas attacks by the Syrian Army. Trump tacitly accepts Assad is the long-term future of Syria. The US acceptance of Assad as the President of Syria has further bolstered Putin’s popularity. Under Obama the removal of Assad was a declared goal.
