The Jair Bolsonaro government continues to advance in the appointment of positions for the parties of the so-called “Centrão”. Today, the appointment of Marcelo Lopes da Ponte, chief of staff of Senator Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI), to the presidency of the National Education Development Fund (FNDE), an entity linked to the Ministry of Education, was confirmed. Lopes da Ponte will replace Karina Silva dos Santos, who had previously commanded the FNDE.

The FNDE is one of the main institutions of the Ministry, responsible for the National Program for Books and Didactic Material (PNLD), the National Program for Restructuring and Acquisition of Equipment for the Public School Network for Early Childhood Education (Proinfância) and the National Program for School Feeding (FNAE). More than that, the FNDE manages a budget of R$ 55 billion.

The signing of the agreements with the center takes place amid the political fragility of Bolsonaro, who is seeing his disapproval rates increase in opinion polls given the advance of the coronavirus pandemic, the economic crisis and the ongoing investigations within the scope of the Supreme Federal Court (STF). In addition, Bolsonaro´s opponents are starting to mobilize on social media.
